Message First of all, I assume you're talking about the plastic piece that runs around the sides and bottom of the glass. The top part does not need to be addressed since it sits only on the glass and should be taped off along with the glass itself. The small pieces at the top corners can be removed.

Assuming that the trim is in good shape (and if its not it should be replaced anyway) then you can gently lift the sides where it rests on the metal part and wedge some wire or rope under the trim, around its entire length. The wire should be just thick enough to keep it lifted up on that side a mm or two. This is what's known as "roping off" the trim. Then you can proceed to use masking tape to tape off the trim along with the glass. The paint should get up under the trim enough to avoid a tape line. This is how professional painters do it if they cannot remove the trim.

Tape lines are ugly and painting is expensive! If you cant rope off the trim, then pull it. Unless you're taking your car to Earl Sheib for their scuff and spray special, you will wish you had spent the extra $100. Trust your Uncle Brandon on this one ;-)
